It is hard to imagine that as little as 60 years ago, the electric toothbrush was something that was virtually unheard of. Today they come in a range of types and brands.

As users of electric toothbrushes ourselves, having used the Braun versions for more than a decade now, we thought it might be interesting to see what options there are on the market these days.

Everyday Electric Toothbrushes

Research shows that electric toothbrushes are more effective than traditional toothbrushes, but mainly due to the consistency in pressures and brush rotation.

The marketplace for Electric Toothbrushes is broadly divided in two – Braun Oral-B and the Philips Sonic.

Electric toothbrushes work based on the rotation of brush heads. It is the speed at which these rotations occur that allow the definition used by the Philips Sonic series – rotations that are fast enough to produce vibrations in the audible range (200-400 Hz). These should not be mistaken for the ultrasonic toothbrushes which use ultrasonic waves to clean teeth.

Electrical Toothbrushes, Is It Worth It?

The budget for electric toothbrushes range from a relatively acceptable thirty five pounds to an eye-watering two hundred and fifty pounds. So is paying more money worth it?

According to the reviews on the priciest of the toothbrush options, it appears that most people who do pay the extra are generally pleased with it.

Most describe the optional settings, timers (which are now fairly standard) and even the blue-tooth app (on the Oral-B 6000) as features that have enhanced their teeth-brushing techniques.

Equally, reviews of the lower priced versions have also been mostly positive. It is interesting to note, however, that most people who pay for the top-end models have mostly graduated from the more economical models.

There were also reviews that claimed that using the electric toothbrush has reduced the need for tartar and plaque removal and polishing at the dentist, which in itself is an economical saving.

Ultimately I suspect, it does come down to how often you brush (at least twice a day) and how meticulously it is done.

It is interesting to note also, that the upper models also come with a ‘too much pressure’ feature that allows you to reduce pressure during brushing to avoid the receding gum line.

Replacement Heads

Generally it is recommended that the toothbrush heads are replaced every 3-6 months. They work out to be almost equivalent to the more expensive traditional toothbrushes.

When to Buy

Best times to buy an Electric Toothbrush are during the Black Friday or Christmas sales as their prices seem to be reduced dramatically.
