Feeling grumpy and grouchy when you did not get your beauty sleep the night before, start your day right with a good night’s sleep. You can find out about how to get a good nights sleep with these ten tips. Here in this article, we focus on a sleeping aid that helps you feel energised during the day so you can be at your best and sleep right at night.
What is a Sleep Wake Light
Apparently, its scientifically proven that a sleep wake light works. Independent research has proven that sleep wake light, managed properly can have a positive effect on your body clock. A sleep wake light wakes you up more naturally, not startled or jolted by a harsh alarm clock.
Now that we established Sleep Wake Light is a real thing and that it really works, what is it exactly? Sleep Wake light or sometimes known simply as Wake-Up Light is a variable or dimmable light for the bedside with a clock built-in. Once configured, it will simulate sleep and wake-up lighting so you get a restful night with soothing soft light and a gentle wake-up call with a gradually increasing brightness from the lamp.
Think of it as an alarm clock but instead of the FM radio or loud alarm tone, you get simulated sunrise, or birds chirping and rooster wake-up call. And, if you are old school, you can always stick to the FM radio coupled with the lighting of course, otherwise it would just be an FM alarm clock.
Benefits of Sleep Wake Light
Waking up with the Sleep Wake Light helps regulate your sleep/wake cycle so you get:
- restful sleep
- wake up naturally
- be properly awake
- feel refreshed
- boost your mood
- have more energy
- be more productive
Apart from all the goodness listed above, it can also help beat the winter blues and is a useful complement to a light box in treating SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).
Wake Up Light: What Are Your Options
We picked two of our favourites, the Lumie Bodyclock Active 250 and Philips Somneo Sleep and Wake-up Light. Read on to learn more.
Lumie Bodyclock Active 250
The Lumie Bodyclock is a range of Wake Up lights with the Active being the mid-budget option. The chart topper is the Lumie Bodyclock Luxe 700. Still, the Bodyclock Active 250 is not short of features. It offers different wake-up options; dawn chorus, rooster wake-up or FM radio. You can also set the duration of your simulated sunrise or sunset, the amount of time it takes for the lamp to reach full day light or the other way. This can be set between 15, 20, 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes.
Now, if you are having trouble getting to sleep, the Bodyclock Active does the opposite as well by slowly fading its light to simulate sunset letting you break easily into a good snooze and eventually deep sleep. It can also be accompanied by different sleep sounds including a sort of ‘white noise’ so you can relax and unwind.
You can also use the Bodyclock Active 250 as a nightlight, a dimmable bedside light, a timer light and a security light for when you are away.

Philips Somneo Sleep and Wake-up Light
Somneo Sleep and Wake-up Light from Philips is not the only wake light from Philips. Earlier iterations are not as advanced but this one packs everything you need for a perfect sleep cycle. The light is designed to imitate nature’s sunrise, slowly increasing in brightness before you wake time from soft morning red through orange to bright yellow daylight. It does not stop there, at full daylight, your chosen natural sound or radio station will start playing from soft to preset level, gently waking you up and getting you ready for the day.
It also comes with light guided breathing called RelaxBreath and you can set the sun settings to your hearts content. With light guided breathing programs, you can exercise your breathing to help you body wind down. There are seven different programs to choose from, with different light intensity or sound to go with your breathing and get a shut eye.
On the other hand, the sunset simulation programme prepares your body to sleep by gradually decreasing light and optional sound to your set duration, gently helping you to relax before you fall asleep. All you need to do is to decide the level of brightness that suits you as it comes with multiple light intensity settings using the multi-level touch display.

The auto-shut function switches off the light after a set timeframe and during sleeping times, the illuminated clock completely dims down so it does not disturb your sleep.
