UPDATE: Being Samsung, they will leave no stones unturned, no market unexplored, no segment ignored and in the case for the J-series, a new J2 is introduced with 4.7-inch display and some existing J devices updated. We have updated the spec by spec comparison below to reflect the updates up to 2017. A slightly tweaked J1 ace with more memory was also introduced to replaced the J1. Also, in 2016, the J1, J5 and J7 received updates to improve performance both memory and speed, followed by further updates to J3, J5 and J7 in 2017.
In 2018, we see the line being refreshed, this time with new J8, J6 and J4. Both J8 and J6 comes with HD+ Super AMOLED screens with Infinity Display bringing the series up to date with the competition. The budget J4 however retains the big forehead and chin bezel as per 2017’s J3, J5 and J7. With the Infinity Display, both J8 and J6 come with a fresh and attractive new look and can easily be mistaken for high end phones. Towards the end of 2018 (Sept), Samsung launched J6+ and J4+ with bigger 6-inch displays.
Back in 2017, Samsung introduced the Galaxy J3 2017 with a 5.0-inch display and moved J5‘s display from 5.0-inch to 5.2-inch. With the new J8, J6 and J4, we see a complete J1 to J8 smartphones without skipping any of the numerals. Every upgrade moves the J series closer to perfection. J3, J5 and J7 launched in 2017 all received stylish uniform metal finish and 2.5D glass front, differentiating it from other budget smartphones. Samsung responded in light of increasing challenges from the competition particularly in the budget segment with the release of J8, J6 and J4 in 2018. The J8 and J6 launched in 2018 again introduces new form factor with Infinity Display. The bigger J6+ and J4+, launched in September 2018 keep the interest in the series going.
Samsung Galaxy J8, J6 and J4 2018
Launched in 2018, both J8 and J6 are big smartphones with 6.0-inch and 5.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED screens with Infinity Display respectively with both losing the home button on the slim-lined chin. This is then followed by J6+ and J4+ both with 6.0-inch HD+ display but LED with IPS technology only. These new generation J-series use the 18.5:9 aspect ratio for a more expansive viewing experience what Samsung calls Infinity Display.
Another exciting development is the J8 and J6+ spot a rear dual camera arrangement allowing it to shoot professional looking photos with bokeh blur effect. Using Live focus also featured on the A-series, you can manually adjust the depth of field before and after shooting.
The J4 however retains the form factor as per previous generation, retaining the Samsung symbol and physical home button. Still, the J4 is by no means a small phone. It has a 5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display making it as big as J7 2017 below minus the Full HD resolution as it only comes with HD.
Samsung Galaxy J6+ and J4+ 2018
A quick reaction on the company’s part after seeing that most budget phones in the market are getting bigger displays, the Galaxy J6+ and J4+ were launched. Both phones have 6.0-inch Full View HD+ display with 720 x 1480 pixels resolution and 18.5:9 aspect ratio. This is bigger than the 5.6-inch HD+ and 5.5-inch HD+ displays on the J6 and J4 respectively. You will notice that all displays have the same resolution and aspect ratio, the only difference is in its size. However, the other difference which may not be immediately apparent is that the J6+ and J4+ display panels are just your standard LED while the smaller J6 and J4 displays are Super AMOLED. All be it the same, size and resolution, OLED displays are more superior in that they offer higher contrast, more vibrant colours and deeper black.
Samsung Galaxy J7 2017
The Samsung Galaxy J7 2017 made its debut in June 2017 with a Super AMOLED 5.5-inch display at Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution running Android 7.1 (Nougat). The device is powered by Exynos 7870 Octa-core 1.6 GHz Cortex-A53 processor with 3GB RAM and 16GB or 32GB memory. It has a 13MP front camera and 13MP rear camera and has a 3600mAh battery. The 8mm thin bumpless body of the J7 2017 has a metallic finish, 2.5D glass front and fingerprint sensor on the front bottom bezel. It also features slimmer size bezels and always on screen for notifications to bring it more in-line with the A series. However, it still uses the Micro USB connector instead of the new USB Type-C.

Super AMOLED Display
Exceptional pictures and videos with crystal-clear display with Super AMOLED screen, similar to those found on high end smartphones. The catch here is they are not Quad HD but up to Full HD nonetheless. Samsung’s proven Super AMOLED display technology does bring out the colours, making them more vivid giving users a richer media experience.
Great for photo-viewing, video-watching and gameplay with rich, true-to-life colour reproduction and an exceptional contrast ratio for deeper blacks. The entire J-series line-up now benefits from the quality of the Super AMOLED display with the J8 leading the pack with an 6-inch display. The differentiator is in the resolution or sharpness of the display. For the bigger phones, these are either HD+ or Full HD and the latter being sharper.

Memory, Storage and Expansion
Being the entry level phone, the J1 only has a gigabyte of RAM and measly 8GB ROM storage of which 4.4B is available to the user. Both new J5 and J7 runs quicker with more memory at 2GB and 3GB RAM respectively compared to previous models with only 1.5GB RAM. The new J6 and J8 too have 3GB of RAM memory.
For storage, the J5 and J7 have the most space at 16GB ROM, double that of J1 at only 8GB ROM. However, unlike their more expansive siblings, the Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+, the J series features a MicroSD expansion slot with support for up to 256GB additional storage. The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge however seens the re-introduction of SD slots.
Things are different for later phones released in 2018 and towards the end of 2018 with J6 and J8 benefiting from 3GB of RAM and up to 32GB of ROM and J6+ with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of ROM.
- Samsung Galaxy J8 (2018): 32GB ROM, 3GB RAM, MicroSD slot up to 256GB (Available storage 22.3 GB)
- Samsung Galaxy J7: 16GB ROM, 3GB RAM, MicroSD slot up to 256GB (Available storage memory 10.0 GB)

In selection a phone with suitable memory and storage size, 3GB RAM and 32GB ROM is plenty for most and is common in J4+, J6, J7 and J8. But there is now 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage to speak of in the J series, a memory and storage limitation broken with the J6+ and J8 in some countries.
The J7 2016 and J5 2016 come with 3GB and 2GB instead of 1.5GB RAM which are becoming standard these days on entry level units from other manufacturers. Depending on where you are, you might get the J8 2018 with 64GB storage and 4GB RAM but for the rest, 32GB storage and 3GB memory is the standard. The storage on the J6 2018 also received a boost to 32GB making it double the 16GB on J7. There is no real upgrade for the J4 as the memory and storage stays the same at J5 level with 16GB storage and 2GB memory.
But, it is in the ability to manage the apps, widgets, notifications and other services that determine the most efficient use of memory. This is not to say that the smartphone is not capable of multitasking but being an entry level device, power users will have to look elsewhere. For everyone else, there is Smart Manager.
Smart Manager to Manage Your Smartphone
Smart Manager, a built-in app lets you check and manage a range of essential information on your Galaxy J series, including battery status, storage space, memory stats and more. With a few easy touches, you can close unused apps, improve battery and RAM performance, delete unused files and run antivirus checks. This puts even the most basic user in control of their phone with intuitive buttons and icons on a nicely laid out dashboard for quick and easy access.
Design, Dimensions and Weight
While there is no ultra slim bezel, super thin or metallic body in the J series, Samsung has given it a rolled edge and chrome effect bumper for a premium feel. The J5 and J7 2016 however does have an all-metal integrated frame for extra protection with rounded edge and slim profile accentuate, its simple yet sleek, modern design. It’s stylishly tactile in the palm of your hand. At only 7.8 to 8.9 mm thick, it provides a very comfortable grip.

With the extended battery life, when your battery is low, you can still use essential functions, like making calls and receiving messages. Image of the new J1 2016 in Gold is shown below.
Quick Launch to Bring Up The Camera
The Galaxy J series’ quick launch functionality makes accessing your camera easier than ever. Simply press the home button twice to enjoy quick and direct camera access. Never miss out on another photo opportunity with this convenient feature.
Pocket Friendly
Priced to compete with entry level smartphones, being at the bottom of Samsung Galaxy range, the J series offers both affordability and features. Other smartphones priced lower than the J series are the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, Samsung Galaxy Core Prime and Samsung Galaxy V Plus. The J series price bracket is beneath that of A series and S series. The New Samsung Galaxy J5 and J7 is going to compete directly with offerings from the likes of Oppo, Vivo, Huawei and Lenovo.

Would We Buy It
Our choice would be between the Samsung Galaxy J5 or Samsung Galaxy J7. As the specifications is rather similar (CPU, RAM, LTE and Connectivity) with the only difference being the display size and storage.
Both J8 and J6 comes with the new screen form factor Samsung calls the Infinity Display. These may not have rounded corners or notched display like other flagships or premium models but they have even bigger screen to body ratio making it much more appealing. They do lose out on pixel counts as both phones only have HD+ resolution, not quite Full HD like J7, J7 Pro and J7 Max.
Nevertheless, these are bigger screens at 6.0-inch and 5.6-inch on the J8 and J6 respectively while the J7 only has a 5.5-inch display. To add to that, the higher screen to body ratio meant they are physically no bigger than the J7 and easier to hold with the narrow body. The decision ultimately comes down to how big a smartphone can you live with.

Hi Stacy,
Thank you for your message, we are assuming you have an Android smartwatch and Bluetooth is enabled and Airplane mode is switched off.
On your J7, connect to PlayStore and download Android Wear app.
Enable Bluetooth on your smartphone, then start the Android Wear app. Use the steps in app to connect your phone.
When you choose you Android watch in the list of available devices to pair, a pairing code may appear either on the phone or watch. Follow the onscreen instruction to complete pairing.
Good Luck

Thank you for the very helpful article, without it I would never have been able to figure out the differences in this crazy J series. I did discover, however, that the 2016 J710 only has 3GB of RAM in the Chinese versions. All other versions have only 2GB of RAM for some reason. For this reason I will be going with the 2016 J510 as it is about $50 cheaper and also has 2GB of RAM.

Hi! I just want to ask if you know the specifications in their respective audio quality? Like which ones have the best sound quality? I’m planning to buy either a J5 or J7 but I’m hesitating cause I’m an avid music listener and I just want the best for me! Thanks!

Hi Reichelle, neither have stereo speakers and they both come with standard sound chip via the headset. I would be inclined to say that they are relatively comparable in terms of sound, so perhaps you may base your choice on some of the other features, namely display size. However, a good pair of headphones may help improve the listening experience. Hope this helps.

Hi! What is the best phone in the J series. Is j7 max also the same?

September 24, 2017 @ 10:26 am
Hi Ravidu, It would really depend on what your requirements and budget are. Of course, the highest spec is typically the one loaded with the best features, but perhaps the j7 may be rather on the large size if you were considering a standard size phone.
The j7 max has extra memory compared to the standard j7.

My mother just bought a j7 core. So far, the performance of the phone is impressive. Nice AMOLED display makes everything look vivid. We’ll see in the coming weeks how if this phone can sustain this kind of performance. It’s really nice to have an affordable and good performing phone from samsung.
PS im really close in pushing myself to buy one too. What do you think? Is j7 core fine than other j series phones?

Hi Joshua,
I agree with you that the Super AMOLED display is certainly more impressive and makes the colours pop… Personally, I would prefer the J7 Pro. It’s that bit more up-to-date in terms of design with near zero side bezels, 2.5D glass and metal body. It is powered by an Octa-Core processor clocking in at 1.6GHz, the fastest in the J series, offers plenty of memory and storage at 3GB and 32GB respectively. Don’t forget that the J7 also has a sharper display at Full HD with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution.

After a day of normal use, I noticed that the phone works perfect but does not drain as much battery juice as other phones with the same specs. The phone is still at 68% after 1 day. 🙂

I am considering buying a J series samsung phone for its affordability but the main thing am looking for in a new phone is the quality of the camera as am planning on capturing some moments for a project. What would be your advice: will the J5 or a J7 serve this purpose.

Hi, the camera quality holds up well on it’s own, and should be perfectly fine for typical every day shots, in daylight. The camera may struggle in low-light conditions and if it is for a photography-based project, then you probably need a dedicated camera for the project.

I now have a Samsung Galaxy S3. Can the sim card by transferred as is; or needs to he trimmed or even compatiable? Can 4GE be used along with WiFi. Data (pictures, contacts etc transferred via Google acct and sim card)?
Li-ling Ooi
September 6, 2018 @ 11:36 am
Hi Janet, it appears that the S3 has a mini-sim while the J-series uses the micro-sim. You would probably just need to get it swapped by your mobile service provider. Typically yes 4G can work along with WiFi but not simultaneously. If your pictures, contacts etc are stored on Google, then this will be auto-populated, once you sign up to the services on your new phone.
